Hello Hoopers!
We will have two Hooping Workshops in May: Friday the 20th and 27th, 18.30-17.30 at the Aalto Design Factory, Studio Room.
After that, summer season will (should!) be upon us and we can head outside!! We have plenty of foldable hoops for purchase/rent for those long summer days at the beach, in the parks, at your mökki, or on your kayak trips :)

Yesterday the Hooping School was almost at max capacity! Everyone got something out of it. In one hour, you can discover many new things about the simple circle–a shape that is as familiar as the blue sky and yet…so newly different when held in one’s hands! How does it move? How do I get it to stay up? If I move like this, the hoop reacts like that. I can turn around in the same direction. If i bend at the knees, the hoop angles up.
One newcomer noticed that hooping on the hand above the head reminded him of twirling a kayak paddle. Other brave participants worked on bringing the hoop up from the waist and over the head. And of course, running through moving hoops proved irresistible.
Everyone left with some new bit of knowledge they didn’t have before, some calories burned, and maybe a few bruises on the hands. Sometimes the learning curve is a bit bumpy!

In the second Hoop Jam the number of participating men soared to 4.
Our first hoop jam took place on Friday, 11.03.2011 in the Aalto Design Factory in Otaniemi.
It was great fun and two men joined!
We celebrated after the session with a Falafel Run.
Warm welcome to Otakaari Hooping School for Men!
The Otakaari Hooping School for Men started out in an Otakaari kitchen with steaming warm traditional Finnish pulla baked by men. However, the pulla was baked for the ladies and the Otakaari Hooping School for Men is also lead by ladies.
The idea in a nutshell:
We like hooping and our muscles are scrunched up from geeking it up in the lab all day. Hence, we needed to do something. As Otaniemi is largely populated by young gentlemen we wanted to create an event that joins exercise with socializing for a well rounded experience. ;-) Hooping seemed to suit.
Although the school is predominantly calling for men to participate, we are a gender and LGBT friendly establishment. Everyone is warmly welcome to hoop it up.
We are indebted to Alexander McCall Smith for inspiration for the school’s name from his book “Kalahari Typing School for Men“, a marvelous story about men trying to learn a typically dominated female trade in a anonymous and supportive environment.
